U.S. Xpress, Inc. Road Test Examiner in Jacksonville, Florida


This is a part time (up to 25 hours per week) position that is responsible for administering road tests during Driver Orientation for all experienced drivers as well as transporting drivers to and from road tests.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures experienced new hires meet DOT and U.S. Xpress standards during their road test; recommends pass or fail decision. This includes observing skills in the following operations:

  • Pre-trip inspection, coupling/decoupling of combination units

  • Placing the motor vehicle in operation

  • Use of the commercial motor vehicle controls and emergency equipment

  • Operation of the commercial motor vehicle in traffic and while passing other vehicles

  • Turning the commercial motor vehicle

  • Braking and slowing the commercial motor vehicle by means other than braking

  • Backing and parking the commercial motor vehicle.

  • Advises Orientation Manager on process improvements for orientation. Helps ensure adequate presentation of instructional material.

  • Transports Drivers to and from lodging facility or bus station to terminal to perform road tests.

  • Performs other tasks as needed.



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.


  • Requires a CDL Class A license required must be at least 21 years old.

  • Minimum of 2 years as a professional truck driver within the last 36 months and no preventable accidents within the last 24 months.

  • Knowledge of U.S. Xpress company policies and procedures preferred.


  • Knowledge of DOT regulations impacting daily operations including Hours of Service regulations, OSHA, CSA scoring, and federal and state laws pertaining to driving a tractor trailer.

  • Must be able to read and interpret all road and traffic signs. Must also be able to read and understand routing directions when using a road map or other communication system. Must be able to read and speak English.

  • Must be able to operate motor vehicle during high traffic situations.

  • Must have skills necessary to operate a tractor trailer and practice defensive driving. Must remain in compliance with all applicable DOT requirements.

  • Basic communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • CDL Class A license required.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Good judgment and problem solving skills.

  • Must pass physical standards test (PST)

Work Environment:this job operates in a normal professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, IPads, phones, photocopiers and fax machines, and filing cabinets.

Physical Requirements: while performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently stands, walks, uses hands to finger, handle or feel; and reaches with hands and arms.
